The acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine practice of Minan Yao (姚民安), MSc, BSc.

I studied Chinese medicine full-time for seven years in China and have practised since 2009. Alongside my own clinic work, I teach at the Manchester Academy of TCM, where I am Course Director. Teaching keeps me honest: if I cannot explain a treatment clearly to a student, I should not be offering it to a patient.

Years of overseas clinical work with International SOS also shaped my habits: take a careful history, ask about medicines, watch for red flags, and be clear about when someone needs their GP rather than a needle.

One thing I want to be plain about: I am a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner. I am not a GMC-registered doctor and I do not practise conventional medicine in the UK.

What to Expect

How a First Visit Works

There is no mystery to a first appointment. It follows the same order every time: talk first, then assess, then agree what happens next.

01

We start with your health history: current medicines, past treatment, what you want from the visit, and a safety screen. No needles until this is done.

Consultation

History • Medicines • Screening

02

Minan explains his Chinese medicine assessment in plain terms, sets out the realistic options and agrees a plan with you before anything begins.

03

If your symptoms point towards your GP, urgent care or another regulated health service, Minan will tell you so directly rather than book you in.

Common Questions

Things people usually ask before their first appointment.

Is acupuncture painful? What does it feel like?
Acupuncture needles are very fine. Most clients describe a slight tingling, gentle heaviness or a relaxing sensation during treatment.
What can we discuss during a consultation?
Anything relevant to your general wellbeing: comfort and movement, sleep, stress, digestion, menstrual health and your wider health history. To be clear, this website does not claim that acupuncture or Chinese medicine treats named medical conditions. Minan assesses suitability person by person, and where symptoms need medical supervision he will point you to your GP, urgent care or another regulated service.
What qualifications does Minan Yao have?
Minan holds a BSc and MSc in Traditional Chinese Medicine from Hunan University of Chinese Medicine and has practised since 2009. He is Course Director and Lecturer at the Manchester Academy of TCM, a member of the ATCM, and previously held overseas clinical roles with International SOS. He is not GMC registered and does not practise as a conventional medical doctor in the UK.

Safety: Needles are sterile and single-use, and suitability is discussed before any treatment.
