ACUPUNCTURE SAFETY

Needle Standards &
Safety Protocols

A clear safety approach for acupuncture consultations, including sterile single-use needles, hygiene procedures and suitability screening.

At Yao Acupuncture, acupuncture safety starts before needling begins. We review suitability, discuss relevant health history and medicines, use sterile single-use needles and maintain clear hygiene procedures.

Needle Specifications

Single-Use Sterile Needles Only

Every needle is individually packaged, sterilised at the factory and used once only. No needle is ever reused or re-sterilised. After treatment, all needles go straight into a medical-grade sharps container.

Sterile Materials

Acupuncture needles are stainless steel (typically 0.18-0.25mm diameter), individually sealed in sterile blister packs, and selected from reputable suppliers.

Supplier Verification

Needles are sourced from suppliers who provide appropriate product traceability and safety documentation.

Infection Control Protocols

Pre-Treatment Hygiene

  • Hand washing with antibacterial soap or hand sanitiser before every client
  • Alcohol-based hand sanitiser between needle insertions
  • Skin preparation with 70% isopropyl alcohol swabs

Treatment Room Hygiene

  • Treatment surfaces cleaned and disinfected between patients
  • Single-use disposable couch covers for each session
  • Medical-grade sharps disposal containers (BS 7320 compliant)

Professional Training & Certification

The clinician holds:

  • 01 Seven years of full-time university education in Traditional Chinese Medicine (BSc & MSc) including mandatory training in aseptic technique and needling safety
  • 02 Hospital-based Traditional Chinese Medicine experience in China with exposure to structured hygiene procedures
  • 03 Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) certification
  • 04 Earlier overseas clinical-safety roles with International SOS, informing careful history-taking and risk awareness

Regulatory Compliance

ATCM Member (Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine)

ATCM is a professional association for Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners. Membership supports professional standards for safety, hygiene and conduct; it is not the same as GMC registration.

Professional Liability Insurance

Comprehensive indemnity insurance coverage in place for all treatments provided.

GDPR & Data Protection

All patient records are maintained in strict compliance with UK GDPR regulations. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Contraindications & Screening

Prior to any needling, patients are screened for contraindications including:

Bleeding disorders or anticoagulant medication use
Active skin infections at treatment sites
Pregnancy (certain points are avoided)
Metal allergies (though rare with surgical steel)

Informed consent is obtained before every treatment, and patients are encouraged to disclose any medical conditions or concerns.

Adverse Event Management

Serious adverse events are rare in properly performed acupuncture, but I still prepare for them. The clinic protocols include:

  • Vasovagal response management (fainting): Patients are treated lying down with monitoring for lightheadedness
  • Minor bleeding control: Immediate pressure application and sterile dressing
  • Emergency contact protocols: Direct access to emergency medical services if needed

Common Safety Questions

Can I get an infection from acupuncture needles?

With sterile single-use needles and proper skin preparation, the risk of infection is very low. Every needle used in this clinic comes out of a sealed sterile pack and goes into a sharps bin afterwards — nothing is reused.

Will the needles be painful?

Acupuncture needles are hair-thin (0.18–0.25mm), far finer than the needles used for injections. Most people feel little or nothing on insertion — perhaps a brief pinch or a dull, heavy sensation. It is nothing like having blood taken.

What if I have a needle phobia?

Needle anxiety is common and nothing to be embarrassed about. I can use fewer needles, shallower insertion, or start with cupping or a herbal consultation instead until you feel comfortable. Just tell me before we begin.
